Trademarks

There are multiple ways trademarks can be wrong. Sometimes, there is just an unlucky design that causes people to see other things than the trademark owner intended to convey. In other cases, the trademark offices do not agree to accept a trademark, for instance because a trademarks is deemed "unsuitable" for registration.

Covidiot

Considering the seriousness of COVID, the Board of Appeal of the European Trademark Office considered this trademark to be immoral.

Instituto de Estudos Orientais

The Institute of Oriental Studies at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil used this logo, which depicts an Asian-influenced building with a rising sun.

Pedri

This European trademark was refused because the wording means "fags" in Slovenian - a derogatory reference to homosexuals. Not sure if the Spanish applicant was aware of this...

Arlington Pediatric Center

Not the best logo to inspire parents to entrust their children into this clinic's care.

Fucking Hell

A light beer ("hell") named after the Austrian town of Fucking. The German Appeal Court considered this trademark unlikely to be perceived by the public as referring to a light beer from a specific town.

Kudawara

Japanese pharmacy Kudawara wanted to use the "K" in a clever way and they succeeded.

Xoxoloco

Strangely enough, the image of this trademark for alcoholic beverages was not the problem for the Spanish IP office. The refusal seemed to focus on the use of the "xoxo" word in the image, apparently referring to the Spanish "chocho".
